Overview
the official teaser poster for Avatar 3 was released, I knew I had to bring it to life. Titled “Fire and Ash,” the artwork by Dylan Cole marks the franchise’s elemental transition from water to fire. My goal was to translate that vision into motion while honouring the original composition. The piece was animated entirely in Adobe Photoshop and After Effects — no AI, just frame‑by‑frame craftsmanship.
Challenges & Approach
Starting from a static poster posed two main challenges: building depth and motion without distorting the art, and creating believable fire and ash that felt cinematic. I dissected the poster into dozens of layers, repainting obscured elements in high resolution to allow parallax and movement. Flames, embers and drifting ash were animated by hand in After Effects, using particle simulations and subtle camera moves to hint at the scale of Pandora without overpowe
Result
The finished animation was released on my social platforms in 4K vertical format and quickly went viral, gathering more than 1 million views and overwhelmingly positive feedback from the Avatar community. It marked another step toward my dream of one day seeing my fan work officially commissioned for cinema or social media. This project demonstrates how thoughtful, handcrafted motion design can breathe life into key art while preserving its original essence. I would love to collaborate with studios and brands seeking to elevate their promotional material through cinematic posters and motion graphics.
