Overview
Inspired by the masterful artwork by Matt Ferguson for Dune 2, I set out to transform this poster into a living tableau. Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation of Frank Herbert’s universe has captivated me, and I wanted to capture the epic scale and quiet intensity of Paul Atreides’ journey.
Using Adobe Photoshop and After Effects, and never relying on AI, I preserved the composition while adding subtle motion that echoes the desert winds and cosmic mysticism of Arrakis. As a long-time fan who has seen the films countless times, this project was both a tribute to the artists behind Dune and a love letter to its devoted audience.
Challenges & Approach
We Breaking down Ferguson’s intricate composition into more than forty layers, I repainted hidden details and extended backgrounds to allow for parallax and depth. To evoke the yet beautiful environment of Arrakis, I animated billowing dust clouds, shimmering heat haze and subtle lens flares in After Effects.
Simulated camera moves draw the viewer toward Paul and the looming worm without overpowering the artwork. Maintaining the original colour palette was crucial to honour Ferguson’s vision.
The result
Very proud of how it turned out.
Seeing it come alive made me want to dive back into Dune all over again, so that night turned into a full rewatch of Part One and Part Two.
the best way to fuel creativity… is to consume more art. ⚔️🥀
